Featured Project: Edgewood Plaza
Palo Alto, CA

Photo: Guzzardo Partnership
The historic Edgewood Plaza shopping center in Palo Alto, California represents a significant part of the City's architectural heritage. The mixed use plaza was built in the mid-1950's by renowned developer Joseph Eichler, long recognized as a pioneer in bringing affordable modern housing concepts to the then emerging middle class. The ravages of time and years of neglect prompted a total renovation to the structures and landscaping to preserve and revitalize the historic site. Reno columns within the plaza's pocket park help define the area, making this the latest featured project.
While the scope of the project is small, the creative use of Reno as a tool for delineating the retail and residential areas delivers a high impact solution in creating a sense of place for patrons and residents alike. Columns strategically placed at intersections of the main walkways and along the paths provide direction and guide patrons through the area. Additionally, the columns add a vertical dimension to augment the visual depth within the surrounding single story structures.

The columns with warm white light sources generate ambience during the evening hours, providing a welcoming atmosphere. Textured matte acrylic lenses produce soft diffused illumination well suited to the space. The internal flange detail on the illuminating columns allowed the designers to conceal mounting hardware, enhancing the overall appearance, while complementing the clean transitions of other hardscape items.

Special thanks go to Associated Lighting Representatives in Oakland for working with the local designer to bring about successful results. Congratulations on a job well done!

This year's venue, hosted by the Designer's Lighting Forum of New York, will be held at the New York Hilton at Midtown to accommodate the increased interest.
If you plan on attending, please stop by and visit HessAmerica at table #280. Terry and Victor will be there with a sampling of products including inground luminaires, bollards, and new City Elements options for RGBW accenting and wayfinding.
The Griven USA exhibit will be located at adjacent table # 279. Be sure to meet with Finn to learn about dynamic LED façade, accent, high power illumination, and direct view media products on display.

Look for us at booth #1351 at the intersection of the main center aisles leading from the entrance and general session hall. A reminder and details will be announced as we get closer to the show date.

City Elements 230 -
New Features

City Elements columns continue to provide specifiers with exceptional design and functional versatility. Our latest project advances the product with unique features now available in LED based units. The photograph above illustrates a column top element with area lighting, a cylindrical illuminated top in red, as well as a wireless receiver in the base to provide remote dimming. While this variant is not currently cataloged as a standard configuration, it illustrates what is possible through the flexibility of the system.
Sixteen columns will be installed on a fairgrounds site which hosts a series of festivals throughout the summer. The cylindrical top will glow red continuously throughout evening events, serving as a visual marker for fairgoers. The optics for area lighting consists of two Type III LEVO LED modules arranged in a back-to-back configuration to produce a symmetric rectangular distribution. The wireless receiver within the base of the housing will pickup Wi-Fi signals from a master controller to dim the luminaire when events are in progress, or to conserve power during the night. All sixteen columns on the project include GFCI receptacles, located either at the base of the column or near the top just below the illuminating elements. Two of the columns include an element to accommodate security cameras, while others incorporate an intermediate BS300 element for adjustable LED accent lighting.
The new features will be added to the website soon, but Becky can provide product details and pricing. She may be reached on extension 224 or by email at bsmith@hessamerica.com.

LEVO v4.0 LED Module Update

With the steady advances in LED technology, the LEVO module follows suit with an upgraded LED package. The new light engines, designated as LEVO v4.0, now deliver 20% higher lumens with only a slight increase in power consumption over the previous version. The LEVO module has proven itself as a workhorse for our most popular pole and wall luminaires including Linea, Residenza, Campone, and Novara, as well as the City Elements modular column series.
Available in 3000K or 4000K color temperatures, each individual module now delivers up to 2200 lumens, depending on the product. Power consumption per module increases to 25 watts, up from 23 watts.
The products noted below have been updated and online specifications have already been changed to reflect the latest data. IES files are available for download from the respective product web pages. Look for future announcements on additional products as new photometry becomes available. Contact Wes Lane on extension 225 or by email at wes.lane@hessamerica.com if you have any questions or need assistance.

Gallery Visits

Requests for Gallery visits are already coming in for the upcoming Spring season, so now is a good time to start making plans. Many who have visited in the past have recognized the benefits of participating in the program. The opportunity strengthens relationships with your specifiers, and in turn, they benefit from seeing the fit, finish, and performance of the products in person. The typical visit includes a half day of product presentations, followed by an evening viewing of the outdoor Gallery, where designers can experience the full scale and performance of HessAmerica products first hand. We are currently working on adding an orientation of Griven products which will extend the program. Successful completion of the program awards 4.5 professional development hours and classifies as a Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) course for landscape architects. We can accommodate groups up to ten people, including yourself. The program is scheduled on demand according to availability.
Most visits have included a day trip to the Biltmore Estate the following day. The trip includes a tour of the Biltmore house, as well as a specialty tour that provides a behind the scenes look at portions of the house that are not open to the general public. A stroll through the Conservatory and Walled Garden, as well as a stop by the winery, rounds out the day there. This option has been well received by design professionals in all disciplines.
A program summary handout is available by contacting Wes Lane on extension 225 or by email at wlane@hessamerica.com. To schedule a visit, contact Terry O'Toole on extension 229 or by email at totoole@hessamerica.com. We look forward to seeing you!

Kohler Operating Equipment and Supply
Immendingen, Germany

Kohler Operating Equipment and Supply, a family owned company in Southern Germany, recently expanded its operations with a new facility to accommodate its growing business. As a firm dedicated to improving productivity through intelligently designed workstations, inventory and material handling equipment, and related products, they extended their philosophy of efficiency to the outdoor lighting for their new showroom and administration building. The owner took a direct role in the design process, personally making the fixture selections for the property. The three main criteria driving the decision were design, LED technology, and quality.
Linea pole mounted luminaires complement the building's architecture.

Linea 450 pole mounted luminaires in front of the building illuminate the parking area and extra wide footpath leading to the entrance. The main factor in the fixture choice was how well the minimalist L shaped form blended with the building's simple linear geometry. Managing Director, Klaus Ulrich commented, "The clear lines fit superbly with our new building." The luminaires are equipped with two neutral white LEVO LED modules with a Type III distribution.
The geometric dayform of Genua interacts well with the building's uniquely styled facade.

Genua bollards line the path leading to the building's entrance, completing the lighting concept. As with the previous selection, the bollards were chosen based on their simple linear geometry. The luminaires produce an asymmetric distribution with minimal backlight, well suited for walkways. Ulrich concluded, "Design, LED lighting technology, and quality go hand in hand for Hess luminaires. They met our challenges in every respect, whether during the day or at night."
