HessAmerica 20th Anniversary
This year marks the twentieth anniversary of HessAmerica in the United States, following its debut at LightFair in 1997. The company appropriately toasted the achievement with a booth party at the end of the first day of the 2017 LightFair International trade show, coming full circle to where it all started two decades ago. On hand to share in the celebration were top leadership from the Nordeon Group, including key representatives from sister companies of Griven, Nordeon, Wila, and Schmitz Lighting. Long time HessAmerica representatives also took time out of their busy trade show schedules to honor the achievement. Unquestionably, the success of HessAmerica would not have happened without the support of our representatives and your commitment to promoting the brand. Special thanks go to all who stopped by!
Pierre van Lamsweerde, CEO of the Nordeon Group, congratulates Terry O'Toole and Becky Smith for a job well done at the 2017 LightFair International held in Philadelphia.
Attendance was high as HessAmerica celebrated with champagne and cake at the 20th Anniversary booth party
Long recognized for its full range of distinctive, precision-designed luminaires for commercial and institutional use, the company continues to innovate and deliver site solutions today and into the future.
Over the past twenty years, HessAmerica products have received numerous awards for innovative design, lighting performance, and technical advancements. Whether highlighting feature spaces in theme parks, upscale hospitality venues, or streetscapes and campuses, discriminating designers have looked to HessAmerica for fit, finish, and performance in products with a distinct design vocabulary.
Here's to the next twenty years!
Featured Project: U.S. Bank Stadium
U.S. Bank Stadium, new home to the Minnesota Vikings, opened in time for its first regular season game in September 2016. Inspired by traditional Nordic architecture, the angular geometry of the building and asymmetrically slanted roof are specially designed to shelter patrons from the city's legendary winter climate. The $1.1 billion fixed roof stadium in downtown Minneapolis serves double duty by also hosting the University of Minnesota's college baseball team during the off-season. Future events at the stadium include the Super Bowl in 2018, and the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four in 2019. City Elements modular light columns are installed in pedestrian areas around the iconic structure, making this our latest featured project.

Originally conceived in 2007, construction on the multi-purpose stadium finally began in December 2013. City Elements columns were specified with ceramic metal halide technology, reflecting the state of the art of the time before the LED revolution gained full traction.
Seventy-one columns in nine different configurations ranging from 14' to 30' heights are installed throughout the site to address the various lighting and non-lighting functions required for the outdoor space.

Single purposed columns within the pedestrian areas surrounding the stadium consist of an AR900 top element with 360° lens to provide a Type V distribution for general lighting. Configured in two heights, 14' columns are lamped with 70w T6 ceramic metal halide, while taller 28' columns utilize a 150w source. For pedestrian zones along the perimeter of the property, 30' tall columns incorporate AA900 top elements with a 240° window and Type III optics to direct illumination into the area where it is needed, while providing shielding behind the luminaire.
Shorter 14' columns in smaller pedestrian areas balance scale and illumination tailored to the space.
The modular nature of City Elements allowed designers to consolidate several functions within the columns, freeing up space and reducing visual clutter. Seventeen columns include provisions for CCTV for enhanced security at strategic locations while remaining visually unobtrusive to visitors. Externally mounted Wi-Fi was added onsite to other columns throughout the area to provide an enhanced connectivity experience for patrons during events. Finally, columns located near building entrances were equipped with externally mounted accent floods for increased illumination in those high traffic areas.
Special thanks go to The Lighting Agency in Denver for their efforts during the specification phase of the project and to JTH Lighting in Minneapolis as the territory agent to ensure all went well during the order and installation process. Teamwork returns results!

Trade Show News:
LEDucation, LightFair, ASLA Trade Show
HessAmerica and Griven USA have been very active with industry trade shows this year, exhibiting alongside each other at LEDucation in New York City in March, and LightFair in Philadelphia in May. With both Nordeon Group companies introducing a number of new products, the venues provide the opportunity to promote the new offerings, while getting valuable feedback from the design community.
LEDucation is an annual solid-state lighting trade show and conference held in New York City. Hosted by The Designers Lighting Forum of New York (DLFNY), the trade show has grown dramatically since its inception. Now in its eleventh year, the two-day conference draws over 300 manufacturers and 4000 attendees together in "intimate" tabletop settings. HessAmerica had the opportunity to promote a number of new products ranging from Arini, a stylized flood with multi-functional capabilities, to low-level bollards such as Morocco and Portal, as well as the Accadia in-ground luminaire.

HessAmerica and Griven USA shared neighboring tables at the LEDucation trade show.
Finn O'Brien, Griven USA, was on hand to promote several unique product offerings such as GoboLED, a wet location rated gobo projector, and Onyx, a high-power LED floodlight with ultra-narrow 4° beam optics, as well as assorted direct view media products, accent floods, and wall grazers.
HessAmerica, Nordeon, and Griven USA exhibited under a single booth space as members of the Nordeon Group.
In addition to HessAmerica's 20th Anniversary, the 2017 LightFair International trade show marked another milestone, with all three Nordeon Group companies exhibiting in the same booth space. The 30' x 50' open floor plan booth concept allowed flow through traffic between each company, while maintaining individual brand identities. The layout allowed representatives for each brand to guide visitors to the other Nordeon Group brands, allowing everyone the opportunity for product updates in a single location.

HessAmerica welcomed design professionals from Miami and Atlanta on two occasions in early Spring. The visitors learned about current lighting technologies and new products, leading to lively discussions about product capabilities and future project ideas. The presentations concluded with dinner and an evening viewing of the updated outdoor Gallery where many of the most popular and current products are on display. Both groups elected to include an optional day trip to the Biltmore Estate the following day.
Designers receive several benefits from the visit. The continuing education program allows individuals to stay up to date in their profession, to develop new areas of expertise, and is often required for maintaining licensure. The forum also allows designers to experience the true scale of columns and pole mounted luminaires within an outdoor space, something not attainable when viewing a catalog sheet or table-top sample. Portions of the Gallery program are accredited under the Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System, awarding 4.5 professional development hours. The program classifies as a Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) course.
Representatives also benefit by participating in the program. While not tangible, the Gallery program strengthens and builds relationships with their designers, often leading to specifications developed as a direct result of seeing certain products on display.
Design professionals from Miami capped their Gallery program with a visit to the Biltmore Estate in early April.
Lighting Associates visit with Atlanta based consultants enjoyed pleasant Spring weather during their Biltmore visit.
We can accommodate groups up to ten people, including yourself. The program is scheduled on demand according to availability. To schedule a visit, contact Terry O'Toole at extension 229 or by email at email@example.com
International Griven Project: Zlota 44
Zlota 44 opened its doors for business in March to become Europe's tallest residential tower. Standing 630' in height, the 52-story building has transformed the city skyline as the newest icon of Warsaw. Designed by world-renowned architect, Daniel Libeskind, the tower offers residents an unmatched living experience, providing world-class amenities and services that create a community and lifestyle that is unprecedented in the Polish property market. Referred to by locals as "the sail", its arching form was inspired by the wings of an eagle. The façade is bathed in color-changing light, provided by Griven PowerShine MK2 D floodlights.
Designers envisioned illuminating the graceful, sweeping façade in bright, saturated colors from a minimal amount of installation locations. To do so effectively, the projectors required high light output to generate the results needed for the tall façade. The solution was to use seven Griven PowerShine MK2 D color-changing floodlight systems, evenly spaced along the base of the façade.
The PowerShine MK2 D system combines two high performance projectors on a single mounting frame, allowing the designers to economize on installation real estate. Each unit in the tandem system utilizes 96 high power LEDs in RGBW, delivering up to 9600 lumens per projector. The projectors are DMX controlled and programmed to deliver a selection of color-changing scenes to enhance the building's architecture.
The luminaires under DMX control provide unique scenes throughout the evening.
Powerful beams of colored light project onto the façade from seven locations.
The design team supplied the luminaires, installation, and programming, giving the building owner a turnkey solution that is sure to enhance the building's visibility and standing within the city's skyline. At only 50% tenant occupancy in the newly opened building, available spaces are sure to be in short supply in the near future.
