Bicentennial Park on The Scioto Mile
Bicentennial Park explodes with color and energy during the evening hours.
The Scioto Mile, a signature riverfront park in the heart of Columbus, Ohio, reconnects the east bank of the Scioto River with the downtown area in what will surely become a vibrant destination for all of central Ohio. While the Scioto Mile officially stretches seven miles from the Arena District to the north to the Whittier Peninsula, the main elements of this green corridor are the Promenade and Bicentennial Park. The park features an iconic interactive water feature, café, and amphitheater, all concentrated within the 4.7 acre area, serving up a vital mix of play, casual dining, and entertainment. The park, which is this month's featured project, incorporates several different Hess products.
The centerpiece of Bicentennial Park is its stunning 15,000 square foot interactive fountain, designed with an appealing myriad of shapes to capture the imagination. The distinctive wishbone styling of the Tanella was selected to highlight the water feature, while the Canto 450 G, noted for its gracefully arching pole, further accentuates the geometric styling cues along pathways leading to this area.
Canto G poles gracefully line the pathway leading to the water feature.
Riva bollards, lamped with low wattage compact fluorescent in a warm color temperature, add ambience to the adjacent café patio overlooking the fountain, while Trento wall mounted sconces contribute to the overall dining experience within the space.
The three year, $44 million dollar construction project, funded equally from public and private sources, promises to revitalize the area, with the hopes of spurring even more private investment in neighboring residential development and commercial growth. Opened to the public July 2011, the park immediately garnered positive reviews from locals.
Tanella's illuminate the fountain area at night while adding a touch of colored accent from blue tinted lenses.
Special acknowledgement goes to Lighting Unlimited for their efforts in supporting the design firm of MSI Design during the specification process, allowing the landscape architects to achieve their vision for this project. Kudos for a job well done!

Livorno - New Product Selected for Inclusion in 2011 IESNA Progress Report
We are pleased to announce the LIVORNO LED pole mounted luminaire was selected for inclusion into the 2011 IESNA Progress Report. This marks the third year in a row that Hess products have been selected for this prestigious recognition by a jury of industry peers, whose mandate is to keep in touch with developments in the art and science of lighting throughout the world. The report is the result of their annual review of achievements prepared for the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. This year's report will be presented on October 31 at the IESNA Annual Conference in Austin, TX.
LIVORNO combines a unique slender profile with the latest LED technology to craft a luminaire relevant to today's most discriminating architectural requirements. Available in two sizes with pole heights scaled accordingly for pedestrian scale and area lighting applications, the luminaire accommodates two LEVO LED modules in the small model; and up to six modules in the larger size. Two light distributions, achieved through different lens configurations are available to satisfy area or street lighting requirements.
The two distributions, designated as ME and S optics, respectively, tailor lighting to the site. The ME optics provide a wide asymmetric distribution ideally suited for area lighting and illumination of wider streets, while the S optics perform well in narrower applications such as pathways and corporate roadways. Both produce even, uniform illumination as a result of the computer designed single-piece prismatic lens. Results of the ME photometric performance are illustrated below.
Livorno XL on 26' poles incorporating six ME optical modules achieves 0.9 foot-candles average with a max/min uniformity better than 5:1 when spaced 120' apart.

Hess International News
As an integral component of the Hess global network, we are excited to bring you company news from around the world. Beginning with this newsletter, we will keep you updated with key happenings from around the world.
Hess actively participates in trade shows the world over, such as seen in this exhibit from Lumiville, France. (How about those colors on the City Elements!)
Hess' joint venture with its Japanese partner, Shingo, gains momentum with the opening of the LED Schauplatz (Showplace) in Omuta. The exhibit displays all of the prime LED products in the Hess line. Christoph Hess, CEO, was present for the grand opening of the new exhibit, marking a key step forward in the country. On a related note, Japan has banned the use of all conventional light sources for use in new street lighting projects, the result of the recent earthquake and nuclear power plant incidents, which seriously impacted the country's power generation capacity.
Christoph Hess and personnel from Shingo toast the grand opening of the LED Schauplatz.
Hess receives order for six Light Towers for the city of Chongqing, a city in central China with over eight million inhabitants. The order totals over 1 million Euros ($1.3 million). An order for two Light Towers had previously shipped to the city of Wuxi, bring the total of Light Towers in China to eight units.
Light Towers, dwarfed by large buildings in the background, illuminate an expansive plaza in Wuxi.
Reno illuminating columns and Novara pole mounted luminaires have been selected to illuminate the new Doha International Airport. The luminaires are custom manufactured with project-specific pole heights and light sources. The luminaires are finished with a special corrosion-resistant coating due to the airport's proximity to the Persian Gulf.
Beirut's key artery, Bhamdoun Road, is receiving a facelift with the addition of over 120 Vincenze tree grates, 110 City Elements modular light columns, and miscellaneous site furnishings from Hess.
Singapore Sales Conference
Hess will be having a regional sales conference in Singapore the last week of October. One key component of the program is the international specification and its intricacies, with the primary goal being full support from Hess. Terry O'Toole will be attending as well as all Middle Eastern and Asian based representatives. With the large number of high-profile projects being designed in the US and Europe, Hess wants to ensure good communication and cooperation between the specifying and buying locations.
