Updated Gallery and Expansion
HessAmerica recently updated and expanded its outdoor exhibit adding several product families. In addition, a variety of new products are featured that were just introduced in November. The Gallery, Hess state-of-the-art exhibit, showcases products in a natural environment, day or night, providing a unique view of lighting fixtures, poles and site amenities in an outdoor setting.
A centerpiece of the new products is the Light Tower, a 37 tall sculptural structure featuring Hess proprietary indirect secondary reflector technology. The installation in front of the building attracts attention from visitors and passersby due to its dramatic physical presence and effective lighting performance.
Night Elements, a modular column-based lighting system, are installed in various configurations throughout the site. Examples in the exhibit range from an illuminated bollard for pathway illumination to 16 tall columns fitted with multiple functional elements for area, low-level, and accent lighting.
Several vignettes were added to exhibit product families with pole, wall mount, and bollard models included in the display. The new Sierra SXL, a 21 tall color changing LED powered column, and Sierra 4000 light columns with static colored LEDs are also on display to introduce color into the evening environment.
With the recent expansion, over 200 different products are now on display in a variety of mounting heights and configurations. To arrange a specifier visit and see the new products first-hand, contact Terry OToole on ext. 229.
Gallery Visits
Since the recent November sales meeting, HessAmerica has hosted eight different groups of visitors totalling more than sixty specifiers to the Gallery, despite the colder weather. With the spring season and warm weather not too far away, you may want to consider scheduling a visit before time slots are gone. As a reminder, visits may be tailored to meet the needs of your specifiers. Side activities such as the Biltmore House excursion, BMW factory tour, or golfing may also be included. Contact Terry OToole to make arrangements.
Marketing & Promotion
With the launch of the new website format in November, traffic has nearly doubled. To further stimulate usage and exposure, a new program will be kicked off in late March to promote awareness of the new and expanded HessAmerica website. The goal is to expose the design community to the enhanced site since it contains so much more product and technical information. A color changing LED powered light cube, imprinted with the company logo and website address, will serve as a visual reminder to architects, lighting consultants, and landscape architects to visit the site. A supply of the cubes will be shipped to all agencies by the end of the month.
Remember Wes Lane is doing regular Webex sessions to bring agency personnel up to speed on website navigation so for those needing help, please contact Wes directly to schedule a session. He can be reached at 864-487-3535 ext. 225 or by email at

Project of the Month
The project of the month is the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts district in downtown Miami, featuring Calida, Sombra, and Tanella pole mounted luminaires. The design firm of Zyscovich Inc., also located in Miami, specified the products. Carolyn Mitchell, Director of Landscape Architecture for the firm, envisioned the exterior lighting for the streetscape concept as being evocative of theatrical lighting and providing a unifying element for the district.

Single mount Calida luminaires on 27 poles line the streets along the performing arts center, providing illumination for both the roadways and sidewalks. The upswept twin-tubular davit arms add mounting height to the 250w metal halide luminaires, placing them 33 above the road surface.
Pedestrian-scale Sombra luminaires with 50w ceramic metal halide lamping are interspersed throughout the congregation areas around the Center, providing illumination and ambience on a more intimate scale. Sombras matte acrylic disk punctuates its form and provides a soft, subtle glow.

Tanella 2 structures, each with three aimable 150w ceramic metal halide luminaires, stand prominently at key intersections around the Center and guide theatergoers to the entryways.
All of the products share common design features such as the decorative satin anodized rings providing cohesiveness to the site while complementing the architecture. Tinted lenses nested within the slotted housings create a blue accent that heightens visual interest at night.
An added engineering challenge was that the poles had to comply with Miamis 146 mile-per-hour hurricane force wind-load requirement. Tubing for the poles and brackets were thickened and anchor bolt sizes were increased to satisfy this need, while still maintaining the design aesthetics.
Special thanks go to Municipal Lighting Systems as the specifying agency for their hard work and persistence!
