Project: Carnival Center for the Performing Arts

The project of the month is the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts district in downtown Miami, featuring Calida, Sombra, and Tanella pole mounted luminaires. The design firm of Zyscovich Inc., also located in Miami, specified the products. Carolyn Mitchell, Director of Landscape Architecture for the firm, envisioned the exterior lighting for the streetscape concept as being evocative of theatrical lighting and providing a unifying element for the district.

Single mount Calida luminaires on 27’ poles line the streets along the performing arts center, providing illumination for both the roadways and sidewalks. The upswept twin-tubular davit arms add mounting height to the 250w metal halide luminaires, placing them 33’ above the road surface.
Pedestrian-scale Sombra luminaires with 50w ceramic metal halide lamping are interspersed throughout the congregation areas around the Center, providing illumination and ambience on a more intimate scale. Sombra’s matte acrylic disk punctuates its form and provides a soft, subtle glow.

Tanella 2 structures, each with three aimable 150w ceramic metal halide luminaires, stand prominently at key intersections around the Center and guide theatergoers to the entryways.
All of the products share common design features such as the decorative satin anodized rings providing cohesiveness to the site while complementing the architecture. Tinted lenses nested within the slotted housings create a blue accent that heightens visual interest at night.
An added engineering challenge was that the poles had to comply with Miami’s 146 mile-per-hour hurricane force wind-load requirement. Tubing for the poles and brackets were thickened and anchor bolt sizes were increased to satisfy this need, while still maintaining the design aesthetics.
